Workers are about 6 mm long and range from orange-brown to dark brown, with fine hairs on the thorax and short erect hairs on the abdomen. They build nests in tree canopies by stitching leaves together with larval silk and are found throughout sub-Saharan African rainforests, often dominating the crowns of one or several trees. These ants are aggressive predators of other insects and also tend scale insects for honeydew, and a queen starts a colony alone in the canopy before workers take over foraging.

What it eats

They are voracious predators, hunting insects and other arthropods on the ground and in trees, often cooperating to subdue large prey. The ants also collect honeydew from scale insects, maintaining herds of these insects for that purpose.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
